why is cardboard biodegradable, and not water soluble?
I was just wondering why card board was labeled as Biodegradable first and rarely ever labeled water soluble? I don't see cardboard breaking down unless water or moisture is present! I mean being biodegradable is a given if its rained on...then it molds and dissolves etc....but Its not like it would do that if It was in a dry environment right? Hence boxes being made for storage etc.....
Dunno if I worded this to make sense or not ...:/
Or am I simply misunderstanding what biodegradable means? ....I was just thinking in a dessert....cardboard wouldn't be very bio-friendly.
Cardboard breaks down quickly under all conditions. The reason you think that water needs to be involved is because cardboard is normally treated with something non-polar to resist water because it weakens its structure. Treated cardboard will take a little longer to degrade.
