biodegradable plant pots are ideal for growing seedlings that are especially sensitive to root disturbance when transplanted, because you can simply transplant the seedling without removing it from the pot. Making your own biodegradable planter pots is easy and costs nothing. You can make biodegradable pots with common household items that you would normally throw in the trash or recycling bin.
Toilet Paper Roll Seedling Pots
- Cut the toilet paper roll in half. Press the roll down flat, and then cut four slices on one end of the toilet paper roll. The four cuts should each be about one-half inch long, making four flaps.
- Reopen the toilet paper roll. Fold the four flaps toward the center of the roll to make the bottom of the seed pot.
- Fill the toilet paper roll seed pot with potting medium and sow your seeds. When your seeds are ready to transplant outdoors or in a larger container, unfold the bottom and plant the pot.
Newspaper Planter Pots
- Determine how tall your planter pot needs to be, depending on the types of plants you are planting. Beans, peas and corn need taller pots that are about six inches in height, while lettuces would need shorter pots that are about two to three inches tall.
- Cut strips of newspaper lengthwise. Make the strips the same width as the desired height of your planter pot.
- Wrap the strips one by one around a small glass jar and secure them with sellotape or string. Make sure you use at least four strips of newspaper placed one on top of the other. Slide the newspaper cylinder off of the glass jar.
- Cut a half sheet of newspaper into fourths. Lay them one on top of the other and stuff them into the newspaper cylinder to create the bottom of the pot.
- Fill your newspaper planter pot with potting medium and plant your seeds. Plant the entire pot directly into the ground or into a permanent pot after the seedlings sprout.
