We all wonder if there is some long lost secret to making a good compost. But there is no special secret. There are hundreds of ways of making compost, and they are all equally effective. A garden without compost is like an automobile without a motor. It just sits there, doing nothing. Let's enrich our gardens with that "magic touch," the compost, more commonly referred to as "black gold." Compost is packed full of vital nutrients essential for your garden's growth. Stop throwing away those kitchen scraps, and start putting them to good use in your compost pile. And stop hauling off your yard trash to the dump, your compost pile needs them, instead.
- Pick a clear spot on your property for making your compost pile. It should be mostly shady all day.
- Decide whether you will purchase a compost bin or make your own. If you make your own, you can do this with wood pallets. Assemble them like cubes without tops or bottoms. Add boards to the front as high as your pile. Using a 45-gallon drum that is open at the top and bottom is also a good idea. If you prefer not to use a compost bin, just making a pile in your designated spot will suffice.
- Gather grass clippings and leaves. Place them in your bin. If you don't have a bin, just start making a pile in your spot.
- Crush egg shells. You can crush them with your hand. Throw them on the pile.
- Gather tea bags, coffee grounds and filters. Tear the filters into small pieces. Throw on the pile.
- Gather dead limbs off of your plants, deadheads off roses or hydrangea, and shredded newspaper. Throw on pile.
- Mix ingredients of your pile well with a garden rake. This will allow proper air circulation.
- Hose the pile down to a damp consistency. Do not soak. If your pile should happen to get too moist, add sawdust or hay to absorb the excess water.
If you are using a 45-gallon drum, cover with a lid. Do not fit the lid on tightly, leave a small opening. - Turn your pile at least once a week. Check your pile for moistness. If pile is dry, lightly water.
- If you start to notice flies gathering around your pile, make an enclosure. You can get an old clothes basket and place over your pile.
