lawn aeration and sanding in the fall .. advice?
I live in southern Minnesota and has planted a new lawn last fall (2007). The herb also approached for the first year, but there are some thin and patchy areas where no grass. Soil has a lot of right clay below the surface, so I'm thinking about renting an aerator to remove plugs of grass. Once this is done the next step would top dress with a floor black mixture of compost /, spread additional SEAD, SEAD then rake in the mix. For the experts out there, this sounds like a good plan? Is there any suggestions, advice, warnings or I should know before going this route? Any suggestions would be appreciated! 
I'm in zone 5 (Western New York - that Buffalo time) with clay soil. You can aerate if you like and add the compost mix. For our area, August 15 to September 15 is ideal for sowing grass seed as Cornell is most successful for germination at this time. Check with your local County Extension for your area. I rake the seed. Instead, I either covered with a light cover over compost, or straw to prevent the birds from eating it.
