How to use the compost in an area of vegetation?
I have had problems with cats and squirrels eating or defecating in my flowers, so I decided to put down fabric and mulch around my garden flowers. Now I would like to fertilize for the winter and do not know how. I bought for my compost newly planted peonies and have tons left over. If you can not fertilize with compost, can liquid fertilizer can be used? I live in a area with large lots and have roses, clematis, peonies and two butterfly gardens. Thanks for any and all advice!
Yes on the use of compost! You will need to consider using it at the same time as you mulch again. If its too thin, then consider raking in grass. If you are using wood, then I suggest mixing it in with your subscription now, as it would be softened by the spring. If your willing to get dirty, you can make your own liquid fertilizer by filling a pail a third of the way full with compost and the rest with water. Let stand overnight. In this way it makes a "weak tea." Here's a better way, but involved more. compost tea is far superior to liquid fertilizer and is beneficial for the environment and environmentally sound businesses.
