Wearing green clothing is not just a trend, but it can be the biggest movement ever to hit the fashion industry for years to come. Since more and more people are getting conscious about their environmental footprint, green clothing can be the answer to looking good, and literally feeling good (about doing one's part to nurture Mother Nature of course!).
But what's the inside story about green clothing? In simple terms, green clothing refers to eco-friendly fabrics or eco-textiles that are naturally and organically produced. No pesticides or chemicals are used in making these fabrics, and the plants from which these fabrics come from require less water and energy to grow. These fabrics also require less energy for production and disposal. Examples of these eco-friendly fabrics include bamboo, hemp, soy, organic cotton and tercel.
The green clothing movement will change the way people look at cotton. Right now, everybody loves cotton - it is arguably the most versatile textile ever produced. But cotton production has come under scrutiny because cotton plants require more water to grow. Almost 10,000 to 17,000 litres of water is required to produce 1 kilogram of cotton lint. That's a lot of water! And conventional cotton production uses up 11% of the world's pesticides, and 24% of the world's insecticides. This is despite the fact that cotton uses up only 2.4% of total farming lands globally. But this doesn't mean that we should shun cotton and go for other materials. We just have to be more conscious about the source of our fabrics.
Another concern under going-fashionably-green is on the manner in which the clothes are made. Cheaper clothes might mean that a chid in the Third World might have helped produce your jacket, or your new shirt might have just come from a sweatshop. Green fashion is also about caring for the people who make clothes, not just the materials used in the factory.
