People have been using rivers and streams to generate energy for centuries – making water power one of the oldest forms of renewable energy. But did you know that, in the right kind of location, houses and even communities can run entirely on hydroelectricity: electricity made by flowing water?
Hydroelectricity comes from the damming of rivers and streams and utilizing the potential energy stored in the water. As the water stored behind a dam is released at high pressure, its kinetic energy is transferred onto turbine blades and used to generate electricity. This system has enormous costs up front, but has relatively low maintenance costs and provides power quite cheaply. In the United States approximately 180,000 MW of hydroelectric power potential is available, and about a third of that is currently being harnessed. Hydroelectricity currently provides less than 10% of the electricity in the USA. That number is way down from about 50% several years ago.
Whether with solar panels, small wind turbines, geothermal, or hydro-electricity generators, it can be easier than you think to power your home yourself. Even selling electricity back to the utility who has been selling it to you for all these years.
