How can I tell if the shopping bags I purchase at the grocery store are biodegradable?
I some times have to purchase a plastic bag at the grocery store. I understand that not all plastic bags are recyclable or biodegradable.
I like to line my compost bin with a reused plastic bag, but now I'm concerned that the plastic bag will prevent the compost from arriving at its destination (due to sorting issues).
How can one tell the difference between a 'regular' bag and a biodegradable bag?
The only "plastic" bags that are biodegradable are made from plant starches, things like corn etc. They tend to be hard to find. There are some that claim to be biodegradable, but they aren't safe for a compost heap either.
If you want to line your compost bin with something then use newspaper or paper bags. My guess is your bin is either plastic or metal, either way if things get squishy in there they won't leak and a quick spray with the hose will get most debris out, so better not to add to the toxic plastics going into the landfill.
