I am thinking about replacing my 30 yr old oil fired hot water heating system. What are the advantages of a gas fired system? Would an oil fired system be better? Which would be the least costly to run? I live in Eastern Pennsylvania.
Gas is perhaps slightly cleaner and less complicated than oil.
But depending upon how the oil and gas are delivered into your neighborhood, oil may be slightly cheaper. For efficiency and environmental reasons, correctly burning oil produces less monoxides than gas. On average oil fired boilers are approximately 6% more efficient that comparable gas furnaces.
If you are purchasing a new furnace, i would recommend paying a little extra for a "condensing" furnace. The condensing furnaces more efficiently transfer the heat into the home by extracting the last drop of heat from the flame and hot gasses leaving the flue.
