Over the past ten years or so, the word "organic" has gained a tremendous amount of status in our society. Now, more than ever, the average consumer is being drawn to products with this label. Is this just a passing fad?
There is a real benefit to organic clothing and this is especially true when it comes to you child. A baby's skin is much more porous than an adult's which means that you baby's skin can absorb things much faster and easier than you can. If there are harmful particles in
the air such as second hand smoke and other pollutants, your baby will be much more affected than you will be. Now, think about what you put on your baby. That blanket that she is sleeping with or the cute shirt you bought her that was made from conventionally grown cotton may have been produced by numerous toxic chemicals that are routinely utilized to cultivate the fibers.
Here is an example: cotton crops alone account for 2.4 percent of all cultivated land in the world however, they use about 25 percent of the world's pesticides and 10 percent of the world's insecticides. Then, during the manufacturing process that turns cotton into fabric for use to create clothes, even more chemicals are added at each stage of production. This amounts to your baby's shirt being full of dangerous toxins that can easily affect the health of your child especially if your baby has skin allergies.
There is a better option for you and your children because organic cotton clothing must meet strict guidelines in how the fibers were cultivated to the manufacturing process and to the actual production of the final product. All of this is to ensure that no toxin ever touch the fabric and therefore you and your loved ones.
Here's the kicker: organic clothing is cheaper! Yes, that's right. It is cheaper in the long run because they do not go through the harsh chemicals and the abuse it takes from the numerous washes even before the fabric gets to the manufacturer to cut the patterns to produce the final garment. It is estimated that a conventionally grown garment will last about 10 to 20 washes before it breaks down. However, its organic cotton equivalent will last about 100 washes before it starts to break down. Though it may be more costly in the beginning, you certainly get your money's worth from organic cotton clothes. As any parent can attest, this may prove to be a huge benefit as many children have a favorite shirt or blanket or stuffed animal that they cannot part with at any cost.
