If I say herbaceous perennial border or edge to you, what comes to mind?
For many people this conjures up images of gardens filled with colorful flowers throughout the summer, only to become empty and barren of flower or the leaves during autumn and winter. Many more of you will think land owners, teams composed of subordinate workers garden. These workers often require borders herbaceous constant deadheading, pruning, staking, mulching, feeding, watering and division. Now the prints may have been as perennial borders thought in the past, today however, perennial borders are somewhat different. They are actually seeing a bit of a mini renaissance.
Perennials, alternatives to large lawns
The owners who are tired of the endless cycle of feeding, weeding and mowing the lawn, have decided to reduce the size of these green areas.
Instead, replanting them with a colorful perennial or herbaceous border. These grasses may have been that all older children, once ran and played, now devoid of such activity. On the other hand, perhaps the homeowner was tired of having the mirror image lawn same as your neighbor, I can tell there's nothing like a perennial border to change that situation.
Planting a new perennial border can really help improve your garden.
Plants generally are much faster and softer growth as shrubs. It is also interesting to see these new perennials grow and develop, often shedding their leaves skin last season to replace only the following spring.
Design and Preparation Soil
The first thing I would suggest to create a perennial border is to become intrusive.
When out driving or walking, have a look in the gardens of others, you see something you like or an idea you can borrow. Another good way to learn new planting ideas is to visit open garden days or gardening exhibitions. When you have an idea of what types of perennials that you like, you can then select a point in your garden to the position of frontiers. Try to determine the amount of sun or shade suffer the chosen location. Do not try to make the plants love the sun as San Miguel daisies grow in an area receives a large amount of shade.
Deciding on the shape of your border.
Do not make your perennial border too narrow, a wide belt will be easier to maintain and search flooded more with the planting of vegetation. Go soft in the corners, we all like a curved edge, but avoid serpentine very fussy. Try to make the long border, you will be able to accommodate many different sizes and flowering plants. Use a long piece of hose or a heavy rope to draw the shape of its border, which can be adjusted to achieve a comfortable way. When deciding your way, you can mark the ground with spray or simply bookmark by scratching with a stick. Follow this by spraying off any existing grass and weeds (if any) with a translocated herbicide such as Roundup.
Now is the time for soil preparation before planting.
Most new garden beds and borders benefit organic matter are added new to it and dug in. This is especially true of the perennial border. So, dig in the soil thoroughly and remove all traces of perennial weeds and large stones, leave small stones as aid drainage and help regulate the temperature of the soil. Dig or even lots of organic matter to improve the soil for your perennials at this stage too. If you have a good lap and you feel up to it, this organic material is most effective when dug in to a depth of 12 inches. Choose from the following source of organic matter ... garden compost, mulch, well-rotted farmyard manure, spent mushroom compost, central garden soil enriching. An ideal situation would have half of its soil organic matter consists of a large reserve of plant foods.
I would advise adding sand at this stage and if the soil is very heavy, sticky or poorly drained. Digging in a good amount of grain of sand or gravel soil and to open its the channels for drainage.
The final part of soil preparation is a holder around 10-20 grams per square meter 07.06.1917 on the ground. 07.06.1917 If not available, then any general purpose fertilizer applied to the rates in the container will do. After all this is done, you must allow the soil and amendments to comply with about a week or two before planting.
This gives an opportunity to select the source plant and would like to return to his newly created border.
